Artifact for Standard Five: Classroom Motivation and Management
Name of Artifact: Seating chart and bulletin board
Date: January 5, 2013
Course: ED 556 Models of Instruction and Theories II
Rationale:
I chose my seating chart and bulletin board to represent this standard because I changed my seating after reading Doug Lemov’s Teach Like A Champion (2011). Formerly, I had the class arranged in two sides, east and west, with a wide aisle in between the two sides. I had my classroom arranged this way for the last ten years. I needed a change, and after reading Doug Lemov’s suggestion to have all chairs facing the chalkboard, in single lines, I decided to make the transformation. I had noticed that students, when facing each other, were more focused on one another. Now, they have a central focus, and are not so concerned with one another.
There is a long, rectangular bulletin board in my classroom, and one-third of the board showcases pictures of students, past and present. The caption reads: We Are What Happens Tomorrow, along with …and Knowledge is Pleasant to Thy Soul…. Students love seeing themselves and their classmates, and friends featured on the board. My hope is to create positive, social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.
